In sewage collection system, the existence of hydrogen sulfide is significantly harmful. It not only causes corrosion to pipelines, shortens the service life of pipelines, and increases maintenance costs; it also has adverse effects on the surrounding environment, escaping into the air, emitting a foul odor, seriously affecting air quality and residents' lives; it also poses a threat to the health of operators. Hydrogen sulfide is toxic. Inhalation of a certain amount can cause human poisoning, damage the respiratory system, nervous system, etc.

The root cause of its occurrence is mainly that the sulfur-containing organic matter in sewage is decomposed and converted by microorganisms to form hydrogen sulfide in an anaerobic environment. Conditions such as slow sewage flow rate, long residence time, and low dissolved oxygen content are all conducive to the occurrence of such anaerobic reactions.

In order to effectively control hydrogen sulfide, we can start from many aspects. First, optimize operation and management. Adjust the flow rate of sewage to avoid its long-term stagnation, such as regularly flushing the pipeline to ensure that the flow rate is maintained in an appropriate range and reduce the formation of anaerobic environment. Second, chemical methods. Adding chemicals to sewage, such as oxidants (such as hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, etc.), can oxidize hydrogen sulfide into harmless substances; alkalis (such as sodium hydroxide, etc.) can adjust the pH value of sewage and inhibit the generation of hydrogen sulfide. Third, biological means. Using the metabolism of microorganisms, a suitable biological environment is built in the pipeline or in the treatment facility, allowing specific microorganisms to convert hydrogen sulfide into other stable substances. In practical applications, it is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as wastewater properties, treatment scale, and cost-effectiveness, and choose the appropriate combination of control methods to achieve the best hydrogen sulfide control effect, ensure the stable operation of the sewage collection system, and maintain environmental and personnel health.
