If a small amount of hydrogen sulfide, it reacts with sodium hydroxide as follows: Hydrogen sulfide ($H_ {2} S $) interacts with sodium hydroxide ($NaOH $) to form sodium sulfide ($Na_ {2} S $) and water ($H_ {2} O $). The chemical reaction equation is: $H_ {2} S + 2NaOH = Na_ {2} S + 2H_ {2} O $. In this reaction, the sulfur element in hydrogen sulfide is -2, the hydroxide ion is combined with the hydrogen ion to form water, and the sodium ion is combined with the sulfur ion to form sodium sulfide.
If there is an excess of hydrogen sulfide, the reaction produces sodium hydrosulfide ($NaHS $) and water. The chemical reaction equation is: $H_ {2} S + NaOH = NaHS + H_ {2} O $. At this time, the hydrogen sulfide continues to react with the generated sodium sulfide, further combining hydrogen atoms to form sodium hydrosulfide.
This reaction is a variant of acid-base neutralization. Although hydrogen sulfide is not a traditional acid, its aqueous solution is acidic and can react with bases, reflecting the essence of acid-base reaction, that is, hydrogen ions combine with hydroxide ions to form water, and acid ions combine with metal cations to form salts.
